mastering the video interview

Due to the affects of COVID-19, almost if not all upcoming interviews for internships and full-time offers will be strictly online! The internships following will even be strictly remote. This summer I have had 4 video interviews and have secured 2 jobs so far (s/o God)! Here are the keys to mastering the video interview:
Practice makes perfect
I know personally I have been out of the interview game for a minute and most definitely had to freshen up my answers to the typical interview questions. About an hour before every interview, I open an empty zoom meeting and practice my answers in front of the camera. It may seem weird, but I promise it works!
Test your technology
We have all been on zoom calls where someone is speaking and everyone's like "..your..on..mu-" and the person speaking finally unmutes themselves and says "oh sorry, I was on mute" *awkward laugh*. PLEASE DON'T DO THIS lol. I suggest also wearing some type of headphones so your voice is clear.
Take notes beforehand
One thing about me...I'm going to have some notes! (no pun intended:) But seriously, do your research! Connect with your interviewer on LinkedIn, write a few bullets about them, their role in the company and have specific notes about the company itself. One thing that also eases my stress during video interview is to have the job description and my resume up on a split screen!

Dress appropriately
I am the queen of wearing a cute blouse and sweatpants, or a business casual dress and fuzzy socks, but my interviewer doesn't have to know what's below the waist lol. Make sure you dress appropriately! You should treat this as a regular in person interview.

Body language is key
It is VERY easy to slouch and not use nonverbal communication via video. However, body language and nonverbal communication are almost just as important as what you are saying! If you don't have a desk available, try to at least sit in a chair or stool so you have great posture. Another thing I have been praised for in video interviews is my nonverbal communication. Nod your head when your interviewer is talking and make sure to smile :)
Ask the right questions
Because interviews are not in person, you don't have the opportunity to possibly meet other staff in the office or even see the office. During my interviews as of late, I have been taking notes and will ask the smallest questions. At first, I was afraid to do this however, interviewers love curiosity and to see that you are truly invested. Also, my Howard friend and fellow blogger Jade Carson recently published her e-book "The Ultimate Guide to Acing Your Interview: Your Hidden Weapon to Excelling Through Every Stage Of The Interview Process". Purchase it here! Before my interviews I ALWAYS write down any questions I want to ask at the end. Recently, the main questions I have been asking are: 'How did the company adapt to the affects of COVID-19?', 'How is feedback given?', and 'How is success measured in the role?' Check out more here!
Follow up
Follow up emails are so important! They should not only be sent after an in-person interview, but a video interview as well. Here is a template I have been using from my fraternity brothers!
Background is everything
Make sure to minimize any distractions in your background. Frame your camera in the best lighting with a professional background. Think about how an in person interview would be...everyone that is interviewed sits in the same room, with no distractions affecting their interview. Try to frame your area the same way!

I know this blog is a little different than what I usually post, but I've found these things to be very helpful & just wanted to share :)

Def loved these tips. I never thought about the LinkedIn before but would probably now use it in the future. Your posture is important because unlike in person, they’re looking right at your in the screen so it’s easier to see if you’re disinterested or tired and such. Thank you for sharing this!
